This multidisciplinary program focuses on the treatment of patients with any of several different causes of chronic insomnia. The treatment emphasizes cognitive behavioral therapy as opposed to long-term use of medications. The most common sleep problems that bring a patient to this program include insomnia, sleep difficulties resulting from shift work, or very erratic sleep schedules that interfere with a patient’s life. Patients with sleep apnea who need help getting used to their CPAP machine may also be seen in this clinic. Patients are seen initially by a medical sleep medicine specialist and by a psychologist who specializes in insomnia and other sleep problems that can be treated by behavioral approaches. The team will meet with you to discuss the primary causes of the sleep complaints and provide recommendations for treatment or suggest further evaluations. If a sleep study is indicated, one can be arranged at that visit. Follow-up treatment often includes focusing on cognitive-behavioral approaches to improving sleep quality. These treatments are conducted one-on-one or in groups over the course of 5 to 8 sessions, with each session averaging 45-60 minutes in length.
